When BudgetMan is started for the first time (or new budget is activated), you are presented with an empty main screen. You can start using BudgetMan right away by adding new transaction. To add new transaction, select 'New Transaction' from BudgetMan main screen. Location of the command item depends of your phone model.
Transaction screen
When you have selected to add a new transaction (or edit an existing one), transaction screen shows up. In here you add your transaction details. To get an idea how BudgetMan is handling transactions it is good to remember that transaction grouping is two-fold: transactions are grouped by type and category.
First item in transaction screen is Transaction type. This tells BudgetMan if your transaction is an expense or if it is an income - money going out or money coming in. This selection affects also to categories (explained below).
Value is the amount of transaction. It is possible to add negative values to both transaction types and therefore have negative income or negative expense for special purposes (credit notes and withdrawals from savings, for example).
Category should be quite self explanatory, but in short, categories are the key to track your ways to use money. BudgetMan comes pre-loaded with both types of categories that are selected by developer's own life habits, feel free to change these from settings. (or adapt your lifestyle) =)
Income categories are:
- Salary
- Pension
- Tenths - Mark 12:17
- Travel - Public transportation, hotels etc.
- Food - Groceries
- Car - Gasoline, parts and services
- Sweets - Candies, donuts, other treats and non-food edibles
- Clothes - Everybody has to wear something
- Kids - Money spent to kids
- Insurance - For not going bankrupt when something unexpected happens
- Home - Rent, maintenance, water, gas, electricity, furniture, etc.
- Medicine - Medical expenses in general
- Loans - Repayments, intrests and other loan-related expenses
- Hobbies - Equipment, membership fees
- Communication - Telephone, internet, television
Date field is automatically filled with current (or previously stored) date and time.
After filling in the details and pressing 'Ok', BudgetMan returns to main screen. Now there is an expense so BudgetMan shows some statistics for your convenience. Note that statistics are shown only from expense type transactions. For incomes, only total amount is shown. Statistics are shown as a bar graph where expenses are grouped by categories. Every line of graph has:
- Category name
- Currency symbol
- Sum of expenses in category
- Categrory's total sum from all expenses in percentage
